Saving Private Ryan: The Best WWII film of the last 25 years.
Plot:
After a successful landing on Omaha beach, eight American soldiers are notified that they must rescue another soldier, Private James Ryan, a member of the 101st Airborne. As they carry out the task of finding him, they quickly realize the absurdity of risking their lives to save one man.
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
1: EPIC battle scenes
Saving Private Ryan has some of the best battle scenes in any movie EVER. The Omaha beach landing scene is one of the longest and grittiest battle scenes of all time. The final battle scene has the American soldiers defending a town against a German infantry and tank battalion.
2: Very realistic
Don't get me wrong, this movie is VERY realistic. People with limbs blowing off, people on fire, getting their heads blown off, blood spewing everywhere, you get the idea. That really adds to the emotional effect of this film.
3:Strong performances from most of the cast.
Tom Hanks gives a great performance as Captain Miller, so does Tom Sizemore as Sargent....Whatshisname. I forget. Matt Damon also gives a top notch performance, but some of the characters seem to lack any emotional depth, and are basically stereotypes (Whom we will get to later).
4: Great cinematography.
The camerawork and special effects are both superb in this movie. It actually feels like you are running up Omaha beach, or that you have ash and debris from a building blowing around you. The special effects, from gunfire to explosions, are also great.
Cons:
1: Character development.
Granted, there are some characters I generally felt for, but some characters seemed very one-dimensional (You have the Jewish guy, the wimpy guy who hasn't ever handled a weapon, the super-christian guy [although you do sort of feel for him at some points] etc.).
The Verdict:
4.6/5.
While it isn't the perfect film in all regards, Saving Private Ryan is an amazing experience. Granted, most of the characters lack emotional depth, but still. You've gotta love Saving Private Ryan. The special effects are great, the cinematography is great, most of the actors do good jobs, and it is VERY realistic. Amazing, and not afraid to gross you out at some points, be sure to Save Private Ryan to your Netflix queue.
